From Biomedical Engineer to Obesity Medicine Specialist in Private Practice

Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Dr. Kerry Reller who is a board certified family medicine and obesity medicine physician. Dr. Reller shares about how she transitioned from being a biomedical engineer into becoming an obesity medicine specialist in private practice.

Obesity Medicine in Private Practice

In medical school, students are taught the basics of nutrition and lifestyle medicine. However, this knowledge is not enough. The board certification in obesity medicine provides more in-depth training and insight on food, exercise, and hormones. By helping patients make healthier choices in their everyday lives, it helps reduce chances of comorbidities.

Remote Patient Monitoring

Physicians can set specific days to practice obesity medicine or incorporate it into their daily practice. For Dr. Reller, she does the latter. She allots longer consultation periods for her patients and also monitors them outside of the clinic through remote devices. Through the use of scales, sports watches, food journals and other monitoring tools, she holds her patients accountable to their lifestyle choices. Since there is data on their activity, there is an increased chance of success and compliance.
