Shining the Light on Sports Medicine

Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Dr. Jennifer Gourdin who is a family and primary care sports doctor. She earned her MD from the University of North Carolina At Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Afterwards, she did her residency and fellowship training at University of Maryland Medical Center. Today, Dr. Gourdin shines the light on sports medicine: what it is and how to practice it.

Shining the Light on Sports Medicine

Primary care sports medicine deals with musculoskeletal injuries and complaints that are non-surgical. Typically these are joint pains, concussions, overuse injuries and the like. Sports medicine doctors can work in universities, sports teams, hospitals, or have their own practice.

Some physicians practice sports medicine full-time while others also practice orthopedics and family medicine. Sports team physicians are also tasked to be primary care doctors for athletes, trainers, coaches, and other affiliated members. They will come to team physicians for other medical needs, not just sports related injuries.

Staying Healthy When You’re Busy

Download a fitness app and look for short workouts that you can squeeze in your day. Having a sports watch can be helpful to track your daily movement. It helps keep you accountable and motivated. By making exercise, nutrition, and sleep priorities, you can find the time to fit self-care activities in your schedule. It’s all right if you’re not able to do them perfectly, just get back into it and keep trying. You’ll find that you will always feel better after a workout,  a nutritious meal, or a good night’s rest.
